Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle: What are the Differences?

Poodle mixes, often referred to as 'doodles' have become very popular in recent years. Two such poodle hybrids are Labradoodles and Goldendoodles. Similar in many ways, there are also differences that set these two types of doodle apart. Want to know the differences between Labradoodles and Goldendoodles? Let's find out!

Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle: Origins

The most significant difference between Labradoodles and Goldendoodles is their lineage. The Labradoodle combines the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle, whereas the Goldendoodle is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle.

There are both Labradoodles and Australian Labradoodles. Whereas the origins of the former are disputed, Australian Labradoodles were developed in the early 1990s in Australia. The Labrador Retriever's friendly nature and the Poodle's low-shedding coat make the Labradoodle an excellent choice for families with allergies.

Although Goldendoodles have been bred in the past, breeding of this hybrid became popular during the 1990s with the goal of producing a family-friendly canine that would be suitable for people with allergies, thanks to the Poodle's influence.

To confuse matters even further, there are different generations of Labradoodles and Goldendoodles, such as F1, F1B, and so on. F1s are first-generations, so their parents will be a Poodle and a Labrador/Golden Retriever. Other generations will have different variations.

Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle: Appearance

Whereas it can be pretty easy to tell certain breeds part when you know what to look for, such as English Bulldogs vs French Bulldogs, the Labradoodle and Goldendoodle aren't so easy to distinguish between.

Labradoodles can vary significantly in their appearance, depending on whether the Labrador or the Poodle genes are more dominant. Similar can be said of the Goldendoodle. However, Goldendoodles tend to have a slightly lighter build, a heavily feathered tail, and a longer coat. Labradoodles usually have a shorter, wirier coat that comes in a variety of colors, including black, chocolate, and cream.

Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle: Temperament

Known for their friendly and energetic nature, Labradoodles make excellent family pets. They inherit the Labrador Retriever's love for people and activity, making them great companions for outdoor adventures. Labradoodles are also known for their intelligence and trainability.

Goldendoodles are often described as gentle, affectionate, and incredibly social. Like Labradoodles, they are highly intelligent and eager to please, making them easy to train. They share the Golden Retriever's love for human companionship, making them perfect for families.

Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle: Health Issues

Both breeds are generally healthy, but like all hybrids, they can inherit health issues from either parent breed. Common concerns include hip dysplasia, ear infections, and eye issues. Regular veterinary check-ups and a healthy lifestyle are essential for any dog's well-being.

Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle: Grooming

Whilst both Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are low-shedders, because of their Poodle heritage, both breeds require regular grooming to prevent matting and maintain their coat's health.

Goldendoodles are likely to need brushing on a more frequent basis, often every day, whereas 3 or 4 times per week may be sufficient for Labradoodles, depending on their coat.

Labradoodle vs Goldendoodle: Exercise Needs

Both Labradoodles and Goldendoodles need to be regularly exercised, although Labradoodles tend to have higher energy levels and so require longer walks. If you're thinking of getting a new dog and debating which breed is best for you, it's worth taking this difference into consideration.

Both Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are popular breeds that make excellent family pets. Whilst they look fairly similar, they do have some differences to be aware of. Check out our Labradoodle and Goldendoodle collections to find fun doodle apparel!
