English Bulldog vs French Bulldog: What Are the Differences?

Whilst these two breeds are both types of bulldog, they are very different dogs in many ways and are easy to tell apart. Want to know the differences between English Bulldog and French Bulldog breeds? Let's find out!

English Bulldog profile

English Bulldog vs French Bulldog: Origins

Also known as the British Bulldog, the English Bulldog's roots trace back to 13th-century England, where they were originally bred for bull-baiting, a now-banned blood sport. After the sport was outlawed in 1835, breeders shifted their focus, breeding these dogs for a gentler demeanor. Today's English Bulldogs are a far cry from their ancestors, known for their companionship as opposed to ferocity.

On the other hand, the French Bulldog's history begins much later - in 19th century France. Smaller bulldogs were taken to France by English lace workers during the Industrial Revolution. These dogs were crossed with other breeds, leading to the French Bulldog we know and love today.

English Bulldog vs French Bulldog: Appearance

The most significant difference between English Bulldog and French Bulldog breeds is their appearance. Whereas English Bulldogs are medium-sized dogs with a stout, muscular build, Frenchies are smaller, with a muscular body that's more compact. They also differ in weight - English Bulldogs weigh up to 50 pounds, whereas Frenchies are usually less than 28 pounds.

Although they both have pushed-in noses and wrinkles, their faces possess other differing characteristics that help to tell them apart. English Bulldogs have a broader head, plus they tend to feature more wrinkles and have their trademark hanging chops on either sides of their mouth! The ears also give Frenchies away - they feature large bat-style ears that stand erect.

Both breeds have short coats that come in a range of colors and color combinations.

English Bulldog vs French Bulldog: Temperament

English Bulldogs are known for their calm, friendly demeanor. They are affectionate and loyal, forming strong bonds with their families. English Bulldogs are great with children and make excellent family pets.

French Bulldogs are playful, alert, and adaptable. They thrive on human contact and are known for being particularly affectionate with their owners. They are good with children and other pets, but their strong will requires consistent, gentle training.

Both breeds are suitable for apartment living due to their size and fairly low exercise requirements.

English Bulldog vs French Bulldog: Health Issues

Both breeds face health challenges primarily due to their brachycephalic (flat-faced) features, with overheating during hot weather being a concern.

Because Frenchies are front-heavy, they're unable to swim and so should never be left unattended near pools, or other bodies of water. They're sometimes prone to eye conditions and skin allergies.

English Bulldogs have an average lifespan of 8-10 years, whereas French Bulldogs have a slightly longer typical lifespan of 10-12 years.

English Bulldog vs French Bulldog: Grooming

Both breeds have short, smooth coats that require minimal grooming; a weekly brushing is usually sufficient for French Bulldogs, with English Bulldogs benefitting from being brushed a couple of times per week.

Both breeds need to have their facial folds regularly checked and cleaned to prevent infections.

English Bulldog vs French Bulldog: Exercise Needs

Exercise needs between the two breeds vary a little due to their differing energy levels. English Bulldogs are more laid-back and may prefer lounging around the house over a long walk. Due to their low endurance and susceptibility to overheating, short, daily walks combined with playtime at home are sufficient to keep them healthy and prevent obesity.

On the other hand, French Bulldogs, while also not requiring extensive exercise, tend to have a bit more energy. They enjoy being active and can handle slightly longer walks. However, like English Bulldogs, they are prone to overheating and should not be exercised too vigorously, especially in hot weather.
