Golden Retrievers Highlight: What You Need to Know
If you’re surprised there isn’t a rainbow shooting out of every Golden Retriever then you know exactly what a pot of gold these dogs truly are. Adding a Golden Retriever to your family is more valuable than finding treasure! Here's what you need to know about this ever-popular breed.
Origins of the Golden Retriever
It all started in the mid 1800’s when Lord Tweedmouth decided to develop a hunting dog suited to the climate and terrain of his home in the Scottish Highlands. Out of his estate in Inverness, he slowly crossbred a variety of dogs selectively pursuing desirable attributes from each and combining them into the dog that modern Golden Retrievers owe their likeness to.
The windy rugged climate required a dog with fierce loyalty and tenacious athleticism. In congruence with those qualities, Tweedmouth needed to incorporate the aquatic competence required of a dog expected to retrieve ducks and fowl shot down over a river. Inverness does mean "mouth of the River Ness” after all. For this, he called on the natural abilities of the Tweed Water Spaniel, a now extinct breed.
By the end of the 19th Century, after decades of effort, Lord Tweedmouth had succeeded. The Golden Retriever was born.
Modern Day Golden Retrievers
Consistent with their diverse and methodically assembled lineage, modern day Golden Retrievers are a diverse and well adapted breed. Their strength, athleticism and smarts enable them to work a variety of jobs such as search and rescue, or in law enforcement as detection dogs. Their focus, wit and compassion makes them ideal seeing eye, or therapy dogs as well. And the fun, loving, caring, and bright personalities make them the perfect family pet.
These clouds of fluff and friendliness are the perfect balance of smarts, athleticism, and loyalty. It’s easy to fall in love with a Golden Retriever and many families have. In fact, the Golden Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in America, consistently ranking in the top 5 most popular breeds this past decade, according to the American Kennel Club.
