6 Of The Best Dogs For Kids and Families

Interested to know which dogs are best when you have kids in your household? Luckily, there are many dog breeds that are well suited to being part of a family with children. Here are 6 of the best dogs for kids and families.

Best Dogs for Kids and Families

1. Labrador Retriever

The 2nd most popular puppy breed in 2021, there’s good reason Labrador Retrievers are loved so much. Obedient, playful and protective, this breed is also very intelligent, making them easy to train.

Whilst their short coats don’t need combing too often, they do shed, so add this to your list of chores! With all the mess kids make anyway, what’s the harm in a little more to clean up, right?!

This breed needs lots of exercise, so make sure this is something that can fit in with your family life.

2. Golden Retriever

Obedient, smart, loyal, and not an aggressive breed. Being very patient makes them ideal for kids, after all, an abundance of patience is needed when you have children! This breed loves to play and have fun, which makes them a match made in heaven for youngsters.

Do bear in mind they need plenty of exercise and will probably need a good brush every week, as goldens are considered moderate shedders. Both activities we’re sure kids will enjoy getting involved with.

3. Beagle

Small in size, intelligent and friendly, Beagles make great family dogs. This breed needs lots of exercise, so they make an ideal choice for families who enjoy hiking and being in the great outdoors.

They only have a short coat but do shed, so will need to be brushed and bathed.

4. Irish Setter

Energetic and playful, needing lots of exercise, the Irish Setter will enjoy playing with kids. Best suited to families with a yard, they can easily be trained due to their intelligence.

Their long coat will need regular brushing and grooming. It’s also worth noting that this breed dislikes being alone, which is an important factor to consider when weighing up if this dog would fit in well with your lifestyle.

5. Newfoundland

Highly intelligent, patient and devoted, Newfoundlands are ideal for families, in fact their sweet temperament has earned them the nickname “Nature’s Babysitter”.

These dogs are best suited to families who have large, open spaces. It’s worth bearing in mind that their long coats require regular grooming and they do shed excessively, so if cleaning lots of pet hair isn’t for you, it might be best to avoid this breed!

6. Bulldog

We may well have saved our favorite until last! Docile, loyal and patient, the bulldog makes a great companion for kids. Adaptable and fairly small in size, this breed can live in large homes or small apartments, the city or the country.

While their coats don’t require much maintenance, the folds on their face and around their tail will need cleaning.

We know we’re biased, but they’re definitely a great choice!
