Beagle vs Basset Hound: What Are the Differences?

Beagles and Basset Hounds are both scenthounds, known for their keen sense of smell. Whilst they share similarities like these, they also have distinct differences that clearly set them apart as separate breeds. Want to know the differences between Beagle and Basset hound breeds? Let's find out!

Beagle vs Basset Hound: Origins

There's much uncertainty about the origins of Beagles, but they were developed in Great Britain over many years. Initially bred for hunting due to their keen sense of smell and tracking ability, Beagles were used to hunt small game, particularly rabbits and hares. They were valued for their stamina, keen noses, and melodious bark, which hunters could easily follow.

On the other hand, the Basset Hound originated in France. "Basset" in French means "low," referring to the breed's short, low-to-the-ground stature. Bred for hunting small game, similarly to the Beagle, they have an impressive sense of smell. The Basset Hound was designed to hunt in a slow, deliberate manner, allowing hunters to follow on foot.

Beagle vs Basset Hound: Appearance

The most significant difference between Beagle and Basset Hound breeds is in their appearance. Whereas Beagles have a muscular build and fairly long ears, the Basset Hound has a low-slung body, short legs, and very long, droopy ears.

The Beagle is a small to medium-sized breed, standing up to 15 inches tall and weighing up to 30 pounds. On the other hand, while Basset Hounds are similar in height, they're longer in body length compared to their height, which contributes to their distinctive look. Bassets have a heavier bone structure than Beagles, with adult dogs weighing in at 40 to 65 pounds.

Beagle vs Basset Hound: Temperament

Beagles are known for their friendly and curious nature. They're excellent family pets, as they get along well with children and other animals. Beagles are energetic and playful, requiring regular exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Their strong sense of smell can sometimes lead them astray, so a secure yard and leash walking are recommended.

Basset Hounds are gentle, laid-back, and sometimes stubborn. They're affectionate with their families and just like Beagles, they're good with children and other pets. While they enjoy lounging around the house, they also need moderate exercise to prevent obesity, a common issue in the breed. Bassets are known for their deep bark, which they use to communicate and sometimes just to hear their own voice.

Beagle vs Basset Hound: Health

Beagles have an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years. They're prone to certain health issues like obesity, epilepsy, and ear infections, so regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet are crucial.

Basset Hounds have a similar lifespan to Beagles, living on average between 12 to 13 years. They're susceptible to skin and ear infections, and joint problems, especially due to their unique body structure. Keeping them at a healthy weight is essential to avoid additional stress on their joints.

Beagle vs Basset Hound: Grooming

Beagles are moderate-shedders, and they require weekly brushing. They don't need to be bathed particularly often, but their ears need to be regularly checked and cleaned.

In contrast, Basset Hounds can shed heavily. Regular grooming and weekly brushing is usually recommended for this breed, and regular ear cleaning is crucial due to their large, floppy ears.

Beagle vs Basset Hound: Exercise Needs

Beagles require a certain daily level of exercise to fulfil their activity needs - usually at least an hour every day. They have a strong prey drive, so mental stimulation and interactive play are important. Just like escape artist Huskies, Beagles need a secure yard to prevent them finding a way out.

Basset Hounds also need daily walks and playtime, but they're not as high-energy as Beagles.

It's pretty easy to tell Beagles and Basset Hounds apart, although they do have various similarities. Whether you're drawn to the energetic and adventurous Beagle or the laid-back and affectionate Basset Hound, both breeds offer unconditional love and companionship.
