Dog Seasonal Allergies Symptoms and How to Treat Them

Many dogs experience seasonal allergies that can cause discomfort and distress. Just like humans, dogs can be affected by environmental allergens such as pollen, mold, and dust. Recognizing seasonal allergies symptoms in dogs is crucial for providing timely relief and improving your furry friend's happiness. In this blog post, we'll explore common dog seasonal allergies symptoms and discuss treatment options to help your canine companion find relief.

What are Seasonal Allergies Symptoms in Dogs?

Dog seasonal allergies symptoms can include:

  • Scratching and biting
  • Compulsive paw licking
  • Hot spots (itchy inflamed skin)
  • Hair loss
  • Persistent ear scratching
  • Ear infections
  • Watery eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Frequent sneezing
  • Dragging their bottom along the ground

Some food allergies will surface the same way as seasonal allergies, causing confusion when it comes to diagnosis and treatment. Secondly, “seasonal” allergies can happen pretty much all year round so what might be an allergy sign may appear to be “normal” for your pup. Although identifying symptoms as allergies isn’t always easy to do, it’s up to us pet parents to look closely for the signs and lend a helping hand. Now you know what signs to look out for.

Secondary Seasonal Allergies Symptoms in Dogs

Excessive scratching and biting are two of the most common signs of seasonal allergies and if not properly managed can lead to “secondary symptoms” like hot spots and ear infections. It's important to spot the signs quickly so you can relieve symptoms as soon as possible.

Which Dogs Are Most Affected by Seasonal Allergies?

Some breeds tend to be more prone to allergies, but both male and female dogs can be affected. According to MSD Manual, it's believed that dogs are genetically predisposed to become sensitized to environmental allergens.

Breeds with larger, floppier ears are more prone to ear infections, with Basset Hounds, Chinese Shar Peis, and Labradoodles topping the list of the most susceptible in research carried out by the Royal Veterinary College. Signs of an ear infection may include:

  • Dark discharge
  • Redness inside the ear
  • Ear scratching
  • Odor coming from the ear

If you think that you’re in the clear just because your dog has never showed signs of allergies, think again. It's been noted that dogs tend to be more sensitive to seasonal allergies as they get older, but that doesn’t mean your young puppy can’t experience discomfort too. The sooner you learn to recognize and manage your dog’s symptoms, the better you will be able to keep them comfortable if their symptoms get worse over time.

What Causes Seasonal Allergies in Dogs?

There are various factors that can cause seasonal allergies in dogs, including:

  • Pollen from trees, grasses, and flowers
  • Fleas and ticks
  • Dust mites in bedding and furniture
  • Mold and mold mites

These irritants can cause our precious pooches to have anywhere from light to severe allergic reactions. Depending where you live, the onset of seasonal allergies can happen at pretty much any time of year. There are even some places where dogs are susceptible to seasonal allergies year round.

How to Treat Seasonal Allergies in Dogs

Seasonal allergies can be managed, but not cured, and catching it at the source is key to keeping your dog comfortable.

Speak to Your Vet

It's recommended that if you suspect your dog may have any allergy, you should seek expert advice by visiting your local veterinarian. Vets have the necessary tools available to help determine what your dog might be allergic to, like running an allergy panel test.

How to Treat Your Dog at Home

When your dog begins to show signs of seasonal allergies, here a few helpful tips to alleviate the discomfort from home:
  • Keep their coat clean & wash away any pollen that may cause a reaction — use a mild soap with no scents or irritants
  • Avoid areas where allergens will be present, such as outdoor areas with long grasses
  • Regularly wash their bedding and clean their living areas
  • Consider offering Omega-3 fatty acids (to reduce irritation and help provide a barrier to the skin)
  • Apply coconut oil (to deeply moisturize the skin)
  • Offer an oatmeal bath to help itchy skin
  • Mild antiseptic spray (for hot spots)

Also remember that during sunny weather, as well as keeping an eye out for seasonal allergies, it's important to make sure you protect your dog from sunburn and protect your dogs paws from hot pavements.

Dog seasonal allergies can significantly impact your furry friend's well-being, but by understanding the symptoms and quickly offering them treatments, you can help alleviate their discomfort and see them having fun again. Remember to consult with your veterinarian to determine the best course of action for your dog's specific needs. Make summer playtimes even more fun with our dog apparel! Find your breed today.
