Tuxedo Cat Fun Facts

Tuxedo Cats Aren't a Breed

Did you know that tuxedo cats aren't actually a breed? Even though it would be kinda cool if a tuxedo breed was a thing, 'tuxedo cats' are simply names given to any kinds of cat that have the combination of fur colorings that resemble a tuxedo.

Tuxedo cats can be various breeds, including Maine Coon, American Shorthair, and British Shorthair.

They're Not Just Black and White

Tuxedo cats are bicolor, and the colors don't necessarily have to be black and white. But if do find yourself getting a black and white cat, check out our black and white cat name ideas for inspo!

Changing Theories for Their Tuxedo Coat

The tuxedo pattern isn't inherited, and neither is it caused by sluggish cells that took too long to cover the whole coat, as was previously believed. Newer studies are pointing towards a faulty version of a 'kit' gene, which results in white patches.

They Can Be Male or Female

Unlike calico and tortoiseshell cats, which are usually female, and orange tabby cats, which are usually male, the gender stats for tuxedo cats are pretty equal.

Famous Tuxedo Cats

With their dapper coats, it's no surprise tuxedo cats have become celebrities!

One of the most famous fictional tuxedo cats is Sylvester from the Looney Tunes cartoons, much-loved for his relentless pursuit of Tweety Bird. Another well-known tuxedo cat is the Cat in the Hat, written by Dr. Seuss. In Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats musical, Mr. Mistoffelees is a tuxedo cat, originally written about in T. S. Eliot's poetry book, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.

The Debate of Tuxedo Cat Personalities

The color of a cat's coat doesn't determine personality or temperament, however, many tuxedo cat owners have a different opinion! Tuxedo cats are often described as being friendly, intelligent, and playful.

My tuxedo comes from a long line of tucedoes. Hi is much more intelligent and more human than his literate. Mate, a yellow cat. He also can tell time and Caries on a lively conversation, in “cat”language , of course, but easily understood by all family members.😀
