Help! My Dog Hates Halloween

Let’s face it, Halloween may be fun for us, but it’s not the ideal holiday for dogs. Between the elaborately done-up costumes, the constant ringing of the doorbell, and all the tempting chocolate candies laying around the house, Halloween is not exactly one for the pups. And even if your dog is indifferent to the holiday, it’s probably not up there with Christmas or Thanksgiving. Does your dog hate Halloween? Read on to explore the top common reasons why your dog might despise this spooky holiday and what you can do to make them more comfortable.

Reasons Your Dog Might Hate Halloween

1. Costumes Can Be Scary For Dogs

People in costumes can be scary. I’m not just talking about the costume makeup or the props, but when people dress up for Halloween, they play the part. Most dogs are not fond of unpredictability. To them, humans come in only a small varied assortment. This is also why dogs who have not been socialized to people with disabilities can have trouble accepting that humans also come with wheelchairs, canes, or other devices to help them access the world.

On Halloween, humans suddenly become different. Per tradition, we get the opportunity to dress up however we want for one epic fun night. When choosing your costume, be aware that props such as wings, tentacles, hats, or other accessories that protrude from the body can turn a human into a monster of unfamiliar proportions. Masks can be terrifying since your dog can’t see your face or expression. And playing up your role can scare a dog if they think they’re being threatened.

If your dog happens to be afraid of costumes, simply avoid Halloween parties and trick-or-treaters for the night. If you plan on wearing an elaborate costume yourself, try changing into it when your dog isn’t around. Our Halloween apparel brings the Halloween fun but none of the scare factor!

2. Not All Dogs Want to Dress Up At Halloween

It’s no secret that pet owners love dressing their dogs up, especially on Halloween. However, not all dogs enjoy wearing costumes. Some costumes are too restricting, while others can be frightening with dragging pieces and noisy accessories. Costumes with hanging chains, fringe, or beads can also be choking hazards, especially for puppies.

If you simply can’t resist dressing your dog up for the holiday, it's best to first read tried-and-tested tips for dressing up your pet at Halloween.

Try to find a comfortable costume that fits more like a loose-fitting shirt and let them become familiar with it before you put it on. First, slowly introduce your pup to the ensemble, reward them with treats and pets. The more comfortable they feel around their costume, the more comfortable they will feel in their costume. And if you see any signs of discomfort or anxiety, abort the mission. It will be best to find them a simple seasonal bandana or collar as a festive compromise.

3. Halloween Candy is Dangerous for Dogs

If you're a pet owner, it will be no surprise that chocolate is deadly for dogs. The problem lies in a compound called theobromine, which is toxic to most pets. It only takes about an ounce per pound of body weight to be fatal, and your average candy bar weighs two to three ounces.

Even in minimal doses, chocolate can cause significant illnesses with symptoms ranging from vomiting and diarrhea.

So when the leaves begin to change, and Halloween decorations hit the shelves, make sure you keep your trick-or-treating candy where your dog can’t access it. If they do, call your vet immediately.

Halloween candy is just one of the Halloween dangers for dogs you need to be aware of.

What Else to Do on Halloween

Although you may want to enjoy Halloween festivities with your furry best friend, they will most likely be more comfortable away from all the spooky hubbubs of the holiday. Below are some simple ideas to do Howl-O-Ween with your dog:

  • Put your dog in a dog-safe room out of the way of trick-or-treaters and partygoers. Include their favorite toys, some background noise (TV, music, etc.), and a comfy bed to stay warm.
  • Get out of town for the weekend to avoid trick-or-treaters.
  • Put candy at the end of your driveway and shut off the lights for a movie marathon.
  • Get a pet sitter so you can enjoy the festivities with your friends and family.

We hope your pup manages to have an enjoyable Halloween! It can be a scary and dangerous time for our furry friends, but with a little care and planning, they can have a fun Howl-o-ween too. Browse our Halloween Collection to find lots of pup-themed Halloween apparel!
