What is National Dog Photography Day?

National Dog Photography Day is a relatively new holiday that was created in 2018 by pet photographer Kerry Jordan. It now takes place every year on July 26th. The perfect excuse to snap more pics of our pups!

How to Celebrate National Dog Photography Day

Here are some fun ideas of things to do on National Dog Photography Day:

1. Set up a pooch photoshoot

Pick up some props and costumes and take some fun snaps of Fido. Why not get their pooch pals involved, too? I mean, you may as well set up a full pup pawty while you’re at it!

2. Head out into nature

If your dog loves a good hike, walk through the park, or a trip to the beach, head out for the day to get you both some fresh air and take your camera with you. Not only are you making memories together and getting some exercise too, you can get some of the best photos with natural light and nature as your backdrop.

3. Take a trip down memory lane

It’s easy to take lots of photos of your furry friends over the years and not get the chance to revisit them. National Dog Photography Day is the perfect excuse not just to take new photos, but to take a trip down memory lane and look through old photos too. So, dig out those puppy photos and birthday or gotcha day memories and enjoy looking back in time.

4. Frame your photos

Not only is it a good time to look back at memories, it’s also the excuse you need to print them off! It’s oh too easy in this digital age to keep our treasured pup photos on our phones and computers, but printing them off and putting them around your house means they’ll actually get looked at and enjoyed!

Tips for Taking Great Dog Photos

1. Use Natural Light

Whenever possible, use natural light. This is likely to get the best results and flash photography may startle or stress your dog.

2. Put Their Happiness First

Ensuring your pooch feels comfortable, safe, and happy is key to taking the best pup pics, not to mention extremely important for your furry friend too. If they're getting stressed by a costume you want them to wear or props you want in the photo, it's best to try something different.

3. Treats Are Your Best Friend!

Because they're your pup's best friend too! Having a stash of treats is ideal for being able to get your pup's attention, persuading them to look in a certain direction, and showing them that taking photos together is fun! Their favorite toy is another useful tool in getting those perfect shots.

4. Ask For Help

Whether you ask your family or a friend to get involved, having an assistant or two is extremely helpful when photographing your pup. They can be in charge of getting your pup's attention so you can get the perfect shot and provide extra words of encouragement. They can also help to take photos so you get to have shots of you and your pup together.

5. Have Fun

The most important tip of all is simply to have fun! Taking photos together is meant to be a fun experience and the more fun you have together, the better the photos! And let's face it, sometimes our most-loved pet photos are spur of the moment snaps taken when everyone's having fun or when they've done something super funny.
