National Pet Month: How to Celebrate Furry Friends & More!

April showers might bring May flowers, but did you know May is also National Pet Month? That’s right! It's a whole month dedicated to celebrating the furry, scaly, or feathery members of our families. Whether you have a loyal pup, a curious kitty, or another favorite critter, National Pet Month is the perfect time to show some extra love to your animal companions. Here’s how you can celebrate National Pet Month!

National Pet Month

National Pet Month takes place every May to celebrate all pets, of all shapes and size. Whether you have a dog, cat, guinea pig, lizard, or some other kind of creature keeping you company, this month is for you!

Celebrating National Pet Month

Check out some fun ideas below to help you celebrate National Pet Month in style, all month long!

1. Host a Pet Party

Why not throw a party for your pets and their pals? Invite your friends and their animal companions over for a fun-filled day.

Set up a mini agility course in your backyard for dogs, or create a catnip corner for the kitties! Don’t forget to prepare some pet-safe treats they can safely enjoy.

This is a great way to socialize animals and have a laugh with fellow pet owners. Snap lots of photos to capture the chaos and cuteness!

2. Pamper Your Pet

Take pampering to the next level this month! Whether it's a spa day with a bath, a stylish haircut, or even a relaxing pet massage, treat your pet to some extra grooming.

For those with pets that definitely won't appreciate grooming sessions, perhaps a new decoration for the fish tank or a fancy heat lamp for your reptile could be the way to go.

3. Visit a Local Shelter

National Pet Month is also about raising awareness for animals in need. Visiting your local animal shelter can be a heartfelt experience. Many shelters welcome volunteers to help with the animals, and who knows? You might just find your next furry family member! If you aren’t looking to adopt, consider donating supplies like blankets, toys, or food.

4. Create a Photo Album

This is a fantastic time to start a photo album dedicated to your pet. Collect pictures from the time you first brought them home up to the present. This can be a digital project or a physical book. Decorating a photo album can also be a fun project for kids, helping them to keep them entertained for a while!

5. Take a Trip

If you have a pet that appreciates the great outdoors, like a dog or even an adventurous cat that enjoys walking, take them on a trip to a new park or hiking trail. There are plenty of dog-friendly national parks you could check out. The new sights, smells, and sounds can be incredibly stimulating and rewarding for them.

6. Pet-Friendly Events

Check out pet-friendly events and locations in your area. From "yappy hours" at local cafes to cat cafes and pet parades, there's often a host of activities organized that are both pet-friendly and fun for owners. It's a wonderful way to meet other pet lovers and participate in the community.

7. Reflect on the Joy Pets Bring

Take a moment this month to think about all the ways your pet has enriched your life. Maybe it’s the way your cat curls up beside you on a rainy day or how your dog’s goofy grin can instantly lift your mood. Pets do so much for us without asking for anything in return. Let's celebrate them all!

8. Wear Your Pet on a Shirt!

Of course, we couldn't finish off the list without a mention of our pet apparel! Whether you have a dog, cat, hamster, ferret, or another creature, we're likely to have collections featuring your pet - head to our Find My Breed tool to find your animal/breed today.

National Pet Month isn't just about spoiling our pets with treats and grooming; it's also about acknowledging the significant emotional and physical benefits they bring into our lives. But showing them we love them does happen to be one of our favorite things! Happy National Pet Month, everyone!
