1. Saluki
The Saluki is often cited as one of the oldest dog breeds in existence, with historical evidence pointing to its presence as far back as 7000 BC. Revered in ancient Egypt, Salukis were believed to be the royal dogs of pharaohs, often depicted in Egyptian art. Known for their grace and speed, they were primarily used for hunting game such as gazelles.
2. Basenji
The Basenji is another ancient breed, believed to be depicted in cave paintings in Libya that date all the way back to 6000BC. Depictions of this breed have also been found in Egyptian relics. Basenji are an example of a dog breed that doesn't bark - instead, they make a yodelling sound!
3. Chinese Shar-Pei
The Chinese Shar-Pei is certainly distinctive, with its deep wrinkles and blue-black tongue! This breed's history dates back to around 200 BC in China, where they served as guardians that protected the royal family. The Shar-Pei was bred to have a loose coat to fend off wild animals while guarding homes and livestock.
4. Afghan Hound
The Afghan Hound can be traced back to the cold mountains of Afghanistan, where it was used for hunting prey. The date of origin for this breed isn't known, but it's believed they predate written history by a few thousand years, which makes it very old indeed! There is a legend that the Afghan Hound was chosen by Noah out of all the dog breeds to take aboard the ark.
5. Alaskan Malamute
The Alaskan Malamute is a breed with a history deeply intertwined with the indigenous people of Alaska. Their name derives from the Malemiut people who developed this breed. These dogs were bred for their strength and endurance, vital qualities for pulling heavy sleds over long distances. Their lineage is believed to date back at least 4,000 years, making them one of the oldest sled dog breeds.

6. Xoloitzcuintli
The Xoloitzcuintli, or Xolo for short (which is a heck of a lot easier to spell!), is a breed that dates back to the ancient Aztecs in Mexico. Often associated with the Aztec gods, the Xolo was believed to guide the soul of its owner to the afterlife. This hairless breed is known for its intelligence and loyalty.
7. Akita
Originating from Japan, the Akita is a breed of noble and dignified stature. Known for their loyalty and courage, Akitas served as royal guards and were esteemed hunting dogs, proficient in tracking large game. The Akita's history is steeped in Japanese culture, where they are revered as symbols of good health, happiness, and longevity.
8. Chow Chow
The Chow Chow, with its distinctive lion-like mane and unique blue-black tongue (similarly to the Shar-Pei), traces its origins back to ancient China's Han Dynasty around 200BC. Believed to be one of the oldest recognizable dog breeds, Chows were used for hunting and guarding.
