Origins of the Dog Days of Summer

The phrase 'dog days of summer' originates from astrology. The addition of 'summer' is new to the phrase, as 'dog days' marks a period of 'warmer months', which today we recognize as summer.

The term 'dog days' goes way back. The Greek and Roman civilizations would track Sirius the Dog Star in the sky, patiently waiting for late July when Sirius would seem to rise right before the sun—a period the Greeks and Romans started to refer to as the 'dog days'. According to Space.com, Sirius is the brightest star in the Earth's night sky.

Coincidentally, late July happens to be the hottest time of the year in that part of the world. Aside from scorching temperatures, the 'dog days' coincided with all sorts of environmental issues due to the warm weather, such as droughts and heightened fire warnings. The Greeks and Romans believed that the combination of the sun and Sirius were the cause of the high levels of heat during this time. Eventually, the term 'dog days' became more closely linked to the Summer months than Sirius and his position in the sky.
