Why are German Shepherds Taking all the Jobs?

German Shepherd Dogs are amazing animals that have been helping people around the world for over a century. German Shepherds can be found in many different professions, such as herding sheep and cattle, guard dogs, police units, search-and-rescue operations, and more. In this blog post, we will go over all of the German Shepherd Dog jobs to show off the competence and diversity of this miraculous breed!

German Shepherd Dogs are known as excellent herding dogs. They were originally bred to herd large amounts of livestock and protect them from predators in the wilds of Germany, where German Shepherds thrived before they became domesticated helpers. While a minuscule amount of German Shepherd Dogs herd animals today, they still have those strong protective instincts and make great guard dogs.

Because of their high intelligence, trainability, and protective instincts, German Shepherds are very popular as police canines worldwide. This is perhaps the most recognizable role for the breed, reinforced by pop culture and the visible nature of this job.

Despite the reputation associated with the serious nature of police work, German Shepherds are also great companions. They can serve as ideal family pets, intensely devoted to their pack. German Shepherds are very smart and get along well with children, even toddlers.

They also have a strong sense of smell which, combined with their trainability, makes them a great choice for search and rescue dogs. German Shepherds can help locate victims who may be trapped or buried under rubble after an earthquake or other disaster. German Shepherds are also excellent at detecting illegal drugs or other contraband. They have an almost uncanny ability to detect certain types of substances, making them invaluable in airports and at harbors where cargo ships unload.

Most seeing eye dogs are either Golden Retrievers or Labradors since their temperament is typically mellower and gentler. On the other hand, German Shepherds are known for their intelligence and intense energy, which can make them more challenging to train as seeing-eye dogs. Despite these characteristics, many German Shepherds have been used successfully in that role too! They just need extra guidance from a trainer to successfully navigate the social aspects of performing the job of a guide dog.

In conclusion, German Shepherd Dogs are the perfect dogs for many different jobs. They have a diverse and wide-ranging skill set that can be applied to so many professions, from herding sheep in rural areas of Europe to taking down criminals! German Shepherds come with all sorts of abilities that give them an edge when it comes to performing their job, but they are also loving and devoted companions for humans.
