Why Do Cats Love Tuna?

Cats and tuna seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly, but have you ever wondered why our feline friends have such a strong affinity for this particular fish? Why Do Cats Love Tuna?

The Appealing Scent

Cats have an excellent sense of smell. They possess around 200 million scent receptors in their noses, compared to about 5 million in humans. The strong, distinctive smell of tuna is particularly enticing to cats. It cuts through the myriad of scents in their environment, capturing their attention and triggering their natural hunting instincts.

Obligate Carnivores

Unlike their incredible sense of smell, cats don’t have a strong sense of taste compared to humans, with cats having around 470 taste buds compared to the mighty 9,000 humans possess. However, their taste preferences are unique. Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their diet primarily consists of meat. Tuna, with its rich, meaty flavor and high protein content, aligns perfectly with their dietary needs and preferences.

Scientific Study Findings: Umami Taste Receptors

According to a study published in the journal Chemical Senses, researchers found that cats have a unique taste preference for umami, the savory flavor found in meats. Unlike humans, who have taste receptors that primarily detect amino acids responsible for umami, cats' umami receptors are more attuned to nucleotides, which are abundant in meat and fish like tuna.

Umami Receptors

Cats possess specific genes, Tas1r1 and Tas1r3, that allow them to detect umami flavors. However, in cats, nucleotides bind to the umami receptors first, enhancing the savory taste of amino acids such as glutamic and aspartic acid. This unique mechanism makes tuna, which is rich in the nucleotide inosine monophosphate and the amino acid L-histidine, particularly appealing to cats.

Experimental Evidence

Experiments have shown that cats have a strong preference for flavors that activate their umami receptors. When given a choice, cats consistently chose solutions that contained umami-rich compounds over those without. This preference highlights the significant role umami taste plays in their diet and food selection. And this explains why tuna is so appealing to our feline friends.

Should Your Cat Eat Tuna?

While your kitty may love tuna, it’s important to only offer it in moderation. Tuna shouldn't be the primary food source for cats because it doesn't provide a balanced diet - it lacks certain essential nutrients that cats need to thrive. Importantly, excessive consumption of tuna can lead to mercury poisoning, which makes it even more important that it's only offered in very small portions.

If you have any concerns about your feline friend's diet and health, always have a chat with your vet for professional advice.
