5 Best Places for a Litter Box

Just like us, cats want privacy along with some peace and quiet when doing their daily business. This is a time they can feel vulnerable, so having a safe, accessible spot in your home for a litter box is ideal. Read on to find out the 5 best places for a litter box in your home.

The Best Places for a Litter Box in Your Home

1. Bathroom

Since this is where we do our own business, it makes sense to put a litter box in your bathroom. Most bathrooms, although not all, are usually bright, well-lit, quiet, and warm, which is very welcoming for a cat.

If you choose to put a litter box in your bathroom, make sure to invest in a litter mat and an enclosed litter box to help reduce the mess. Wet floors plus kitty litter can be a recipe for disaster, so be prepared.

2. Living Room

Often one of the larger, brighter, and more comfortable spaces in a home, living rooms can be great for litter boxes. Plus, there are tons of products out there that disguise litter boxes as furniture or home decor so you avoid the eyesore of looking at a litter box in your living room.

However, keep in mind that cats usually want to avoid high-traffic areas of the home when doing their business. Cats need a quiet space for their litter box, so if your living room is on the small side and you tend to host guests and gatherings often, this probably isn't the best option for your kitty.

3. Laundry Room

Laundry rooms are often the perfect places for litter boxes because they're typically low-traffic areas and are easy to clean. The downside would be the lighting and space of the room - if your laundry room is dark, damp, and small, it’s probably best to find a different spot. But if you have an open laundry room with lots of windows and good lighting, this might be the perfect place for a litter box.

4. Bedroom

Cats love warm, quiet, and comfortable spaces, especially if they can be near their owners. If you don’t object, a litter box in your bedroom can be pretty helpful. If you can do so, try turning a spare bedroom into a cat sanctuary with multiple litter boxes (spaced apart from one another), cat trees, cozy nooks, and toys.

5. Get Creative

If you’re now at number five and thinking, “Wow, none of these options work for my home,” then get creative. If you live in an apartment, condo, or just have small spaces in your home, you most likely have very few options, but always remember that there are solutions for you and your kitty. Here are some ideas:

  • Accessories such as night lights can brighten dark spaces, making them more appealing.
  • You could place a little box on a balcony if you're in an apartment, with a cat flap so they always have access.
  • Add a cat flap to interior doors or cut a hole in the door - this opens up areas such as storage cupboards and hallway closets as options.

How Many Litter Boxes Should My Cat Have?

Having the right amount of litter boxes in your household is also an important consideration. It’s recommended to have 1 litter box per cat in your home, plus 1. So, if you have 3 cats, that means 4 litter boxes. The reason behind this madness is that some cats are high maintenance and prefer to do their business in different boxes to avoid crossover, i.e., pee in one box and poo in another. If your cat is finicky and this behavior sounds oddly familiar, you might need additional boxes in your home.

Finding space for more than 1 litter box can be tricky, but it does have advantages if you choose to keep them in separate places. If 1 litter box is in a room where there are are a few people gathered, they have another option in a different room. It also means that if the door to the room with 1 litter box is mistakenly closed, they can still access the other litter box.
