How to Keep Your Cat Safe in the Winter: Our 7 Tips
As temperatures are starting to drop, now is the perfect time to ensure you know how to keep your cat safe in the winter months. There are plenty of ways you can get prepared for the cooler climates of the winter. Here are 7 tips to help you plan ahead.
1. Get Them Microchipped
Getting your cat microchipped gives you peace of mind. Feel safe in the knowledge that if your cat ever gets lost and is picked up by someone else, by simply checking the microchip, you'll be reunited. If your cat is already microchipped, don’t forget to check your contact details are up to date.
2. Provide a Litter Tray
If temperatures are likely to get very low where you live, providing a litter tray in your house will mean your cat can stay inside, so they don’t need to venture out into the cold. If the weather takes a sudden turn for the worst, it’s always best to be prepared so you’re ready to keep them inside if you need to.
3. Install a Cat Flap
Installing a cat flap will enable your favorite feline to come back inside whenever they’re feeling the chill. If they can easily gain access to the indoors whenever they wish, they’re far less likely to try to find other places to keep warm, which may lead to them becoming trapped in an outbuilding or shed.
4. Provide Somewhere Warm to Sleep
Encourage them to stay indoors when there’s bad weather or the temperatures are very low by providing somewhere warm to sleep. Cats love to snuggle up somewhere, so a cozy bed or blanket is perfect for them to get comfy and stay safe.
5. Check Your Car Before You Leave
Warm cars are somewhere cats can choose to hide when it’s cold weather. Check the space under the car bonnet to make sure they’re not hiding there, close to the warm engine.
6. Provide Indoor Drinking Water
Make sure drinking water is available indoors in case it freezes outside. If the only water bowl is frozen, there’s a danger they’ll go looking elsewhere for a drink and could end up ingesting something poisonous.
7. Know the Dangers of Antifreeze
Antifreeze is extremely poisonous to cats, so it must be kept safely away from them. Store it somewhere safe and make sure any spillages are cleaned up straight away. If you fear they’ve ingested antifreeze or something similar, it’s always worth getting them to the vet to be checked over for their safety.
