Best Friends Mission

Best Friends' mission is to create a no-kill nation by 2025. In a no-kill nation, every shelter is dedicated to saving all healthy and treatable pets, eliminating the need for unnecessary euthanasia.

How Do They Hope To Do This?

Best Friends is leading the no-kill movement throughout the country. They work with animal shelters, lifesaving groups, and individual members of the community to take responsibility for at-risk pets in their area.

Work they carry out includes:

• Running an animal sanctuary and lifesaving centers.
• Helping to remove barriers to adoption for people who wish to provide a loving home for pets.
• Supporting foster programs.
• Providing and supporting spay/neuter programs.
• Supporting trap-neuter-vaccinate-return programs for free-roaming outdoor cats.
• Providing support and training for animal shelters and rescue groups.

The Statistics

According to Best Friends, around 378,000 dogs and cats were killed in our nation's shelters during 2022, just because they didn't have somewhere safe to call home.

However, during this same year, 3.6 million dogs and cats were saved in shelters across the country.

The national save rate increased from 70.7% in 2016 to 81.4% in 2022.
