According to Rover, this year has ushered in a big change at the top of the popular names list for girl dogs! But when it comes to the boys, it seems there’s still no knocking the top dog (or name!) off the number 1 spot. Let’s dive into the results!

'Max' is certainly popular, remaining the top male dog name for the 10th year in a row. After 10 years at the top spot for popularity, Bella has finally been overtaken by the name Luna, a name which has risen up the ranks over the last 10 years to become the most popular.

There have been lots of influences for increasingly popular dog names in 2022, including:
The name Julia Roberts was trending up 135%, as was Robin Williams (85%), Samuel L. Greyhound (85%), and Brad Pitt (51%).
While some names inspired by the Royal Family were trending down this year, many saw the opposite, including Lilibet (282%), William (24%), Lili (24%), Elizabeth (35%), Jubilee (7%), Diana (6%), and Archie (2%).
Feeling musical? Names influenced by musicians this year include Bieber (185%), Spears (135%), Jlo (118%), Doja Cat (85%), Jimin (35%), Styles (25%), and Taylor Swift (10%). We think Dolly Barkin deserves a mention too!
While the names Covid, Rona, and Fauci are all trending down this year, there’s one Covid-related name that’s trending up: Pfizer is up 185% from last year!
Food has been very popular this year for influencing dog names. The most popular food-related name has been Hotpot, trending up an impressive 1,085%! Other names trending up include Sashimi (785%), Pastrami (485%), Yerba (485%), and Calzone (435%).

There’s a wide variety of new dog names added to Rover’s list this year, including some rather amusing and creative entries! Here are some examples:
1980s rock-inspired names: Gene Simmons, Ozzy Pawsborn, Steven Tyler, Eddie van Halen.
Food-inspired names: Doritos, Cheddar Cheese, Cheeto Puff, Gazpacho, Stroopwafel, Spicy Nugget, Mcgriddle.
Unique names: Uh Oh, Doomsday, Damnit, Lamp, Math, Subpoena, Fudgie the Whale.
We’re not sure these will be topping the Most Popular lists anytime soon, but who knows!
