The Most Popular Dog Names of 2023 by Gender

In the 2022 popularity charts, there was a big change at the top spot for girls' names, with Luna finally knocking Bella out of top position. However, in 2023 it was time for a big change in the boys' list, with Charlie ending Max's 10-year reign at the top.

According to Rover, here's how the top 10 plays out:

Trending Dog Names 2023

As always, dog owners found naming inspo from plenty of areas during 2023, including:

The 90s and Early 2000s

Music from the 1990s and early 2000s has been a particular source of inspiration. Alanis (Morissette) was trending up an impressive 547%, with Ginger Spice (47%) and Nirvana (56%) also on the rise.

Other topics from this time have also provided inspiration, including toys such as Furby (27%), Nerf (17%) and Polly Pocket (14%). 

Celebrities

Similarly to 2022, Brad Pitt (47%) was trending up, as were the names Drew Barrymore (297%) and Halle Berry (97%). 

Music

Music again offered inspiration in 2023, with names including Harry Styles (98%), Exo (46%), Swifty (37%), Ciara (24%) all trending up.

A musical artist who never fails to inspire dog names is Snoop Dogg, with variations of his canine-themed name including Snoop-Dog, Snoop Dizzle, and Snoop Doggie Dog.

Food and Drink

Food and drink also never fails to be a popular influence. The big movers of 2023 included Beer (330%), Green Bean (217%), Cheerios (198%), Stilton (198%), Stella Artois (198%), S'more (157%), Tiramisu (122%).

TV Shows

Plenty of dogs were named after TV shows in 2023, including Wednesday Adams (297%) and Thing (197%) from the Netflix series Wednesday, Bluey (60%) from the lovable kids show, Sandoval (197%) inspired by Vanderpump Rules, Teeter (297%) from Yellowstone, and The Bear (197%).

New Dog Names

It's always entertaining to see what new names have been added to Rover’s list each year, and 2023 was no exception! Here are some examples:

Music: Spice Girl, Bangtan, Zhou Zhou, Shania Twain, Linkin Bark, Hairy Styles.

Celebrities: Pedro Pawscal, Martha Stewart, Leonardo Dogcaprio

TV & Film: Gomez Addams, Morticia Addams, Maximoff.

Food-inspired names: Frosted Flakes, Lunchables, Miss Hot Pocket, Gogurt, Miss Twinkie, Cornichon, Pop Tart, Eggsy Benedict, Peanut Butta, Everything Bagel.

There was certainly creativity and unique inspirations involved in some of these new additions!
