Celebrating National Walking the Dog Day

There's a day dedicated to celebrating one of the most cherished activities shared between humans and their canine companions: National Walking the Dog Day! This day, while seemingly simple in its premise, holds a depth of significance that goes beyond just taking a leisurely stroll around the block - find out more below.

National Walking the Dog Day

Taking place every February 22nd, National Walking the Dog Day is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of being a responsible pet owner and giving your dog regular exercise.

First created in 2010, this awareness day is now an annual occurance that promotes regular walks for pups and their owners. It's a great follow-up to Walk Your Dog Month that takes place every January.

The Importance of Walking Your Dog

Walking your dog is about more than just a bathroom break; it's a vital activity that impacts their physical health, mental stimulation, and emotional wellbeing.

Benefits For Your Pup

Regular walks can help prevent obesity, maintain healthy joints, and reduce behavioral problems by burning off excess energy. Plus, the sensory experience of being outdoors is like a new adventure for dogs every time, allowing them to engage with their environment in a way that’s natural and fulfilling.

Benefits For Humans

For us humans, the benefits are equally impressive. Walking is a great form of exercise that can improve cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, and reduce stress.

But perhaps the most invaluable benefit of all is the strengthening of the bond between you and your pet. Spending quality time together and exploring the world side by side greatly enhances your relationship.

Celebrating National Walking the Dog Day

National Walking the Dog Day is the perfect opportunity to make the most of walks together and to figure out ways to make it a fun experience for both of you.

Here are a few ways to celebrate this day and make it memorable:

Explore a New Trail

Break away from your routine path and discover a new trail or park in your area. The new sights, smells, and sounds can make the walk more exciting and stimulating for both you and your pup. Why not see if there's a nearby dog-friendly national park you could visit together?

Plan a Walking Group

Fancy being sociable? Gather friends, family, and neighbors with their pups for a group walk. It’s a great way to socialize and enjoy the company of other dog lovers, and your pets can make some new friends too.

Inspire Others

Take photos or videos of your walking adventure to share on social media to inspire others to lace up their sneakers and get exploring new places with their pups. You can help to spread awareness about the importance of regular dog walking for their health and wellbeing.

Give Back

Consider walking a dog from a local shelter or volunteering your time to help out. Many shelters are in need of volunteers to walk and socialize with their dogs, making this a rewarding way to celebrate the day. We're proud to support Best Friends Animal Society as part of our mission to make a difference.

Pick Some New Walking Accessories

There's nothing that puts a spring in your step like getting some new goodies for walkies! You could pick out a new leash in a fun color, treat yourself to a new pair of hiking boots, and select a fun dog-themed outfit from our Dogs Collection

National Walking the Dog Day is a reminder of the simple joys that we can experience with our pups, like going on fun walks together where we can appreciate the fresh air, the exercise, and the happiness it brings for humans and dogs alike. So, pick up some pet portrait apparel, lace up your walking shoes, grab the leash, and set off on a walking adventure that celebrates the special bond between you and your furry friend.
