French Bulldog vs Boston Terrier: What Are the Differences?

When it comes to choosing a small, friendly, and adaptable canine companion, two breeds often come to mind: the French Bulldog and the Boston Terrier. Although they can appear to be very similar, these two breeds have distinct characteristics that set them apart. Want to know the differences between French Bulldog and Boston Terrier breeds? Let's find out!

Boston Terrier

French Bulldog vs Boston Terrier: Origins

The French Bulldog originated in England as a miniature version of the British Bulldog. They were taken to France by lace workers during the Industrial Revolution, where they gained popularity and the name 'French Bulldog.'

Boston Terriers, on the other hand, have an American origin. Developed in the late 19th century in Boston, Massachusetts, they were bred from a mix of English Bulldogs and now-extinct white English Terriers. Originally bred for pit fighting, they quickly transitioned to being companion dogs and were nicknamed the “American Gentleman” for their tuxedo-like markings.

French Bulldog vs Boston Terrier: Appearance

The most significant difference between French Bulldog and Boston Terrier breeds is their stockiness. Whilst both are small breeds, the French Bulldog is generally stockier and heavier than the Boston Terrier, weighing in at up to 28 pounds, compared to the lighter Boston weight of between 12 and 25 pounds.

Another noticeable difference is their ear shapes. Frenchies are known for their signature bat ears, whereas Boston Terriers have more pointed ears.

Boston Terriers always have tuxedo markings, which can be white and black, brindle, or dark brown. On the other hand, Frenchies can be various colors, including white, fawn, brindle, and a mix of 2 colors.

French Bulldog vs Boston Terrier: Temperament

French Bulldogs are known for their laid-back and affectionate nature. They are generally quiet and prefer lounging to long, active play sessions. They are great with children and other pets and are known for being particularly clingy to their owners.

Boston Terriers are lively, intelligent, and affectionate. They are known for their high energy levels and need for regular exercise. They are also extremely friendly and do well in families and with other pets.

French Bulldog vs Boston Terrier: Health Issues

Both breeds have unique health concerns due to their brachycephalic (flat-faced) nature, which can lead to breathing issues. French Bulldogs often have more health problems related to their skin folds and are prone to heat exhaustion. Because they're front-heavy, they're unable to swim and so should never be left unattended near bodies of water. Boston Terriers, with their larger eyes, are prone to eye issues.

The average lifespan of a French Bulldog is about 10-12 years, while Boston Terriers typically live 11-13 years.

French Bulldog vs Boston Terrier: Grooming

Both breeds shed minimally and only need to be bathed occasionally. However, an important aspect of French Bulldog grooming is regular cleaning of their skin folds to prevent infection.

French Bulldog vs Boston Terrier: Exercise Needs

Boston Terriers need regular exercise and mental stimulation. French Bulldogs, while they also enjoy playtime, are less active and can overheat easily, so exercise should be moderate and monitored.

Whilst French Bulldogs and Boston Terriers can often be confused with each other, they have key differences that set them apart. Both breeds are small, affectionate dogs that can bring immense joy and companionship. Find fun ways to show off your love for these breeds with our French Bulldog and Boston Terrier collections.
